Origin and number of the Gusen prisoners
Between 1939 and 1945, at least 71.000 individuals were imprisoned at Gusen, the majority of them deportees from the various European territories under German influence. The categorisation of their nationality was based on the criteria of the German occupiers and as such does not necessarily correspond to the prisoners’ personal definition of their identity.
Prisoners belonging to at least 27 different nationalities were registered at Gusen:

At least 35.800 prisoners died at Gusen.
